Annie Kelly, Nicole Lahti and Sonja Wilson all played the part of Belgian Jennie at this year’s Jerome Ghost Walk.
The Ghostwalk audience experienced the story of “The Unscrupulous Madame Belgian Jennie,” a lady of questionable repute who amassed a fortune that made her the wealthiest woman in the Arizona Territory, a place once known as “the wickedest town in the west.”
Hundreds of people joined The Jerome Historical Society in a ghostly historical journey, back to what this mining town used to be. The audience looked inside the real life story of Jennie Bauters, an immigrant from the great country state of Belgium, whose sharp business acumen led her to the top of her profession. During a decade in Jerome, she raised the spirits of many a mining man. And through three devastating fires, she never closed her doors for more than a week, becoming a beloved maternal figure to the outcasts and wayward souls of Jerome’s underbelly.
